2022 Gallery of Renown

December 11, 2021
Hi all,

It's that time again …

For Bill James Online veterans, you'll recognize the "GOR" - The Gallery of Renown. For those of you who are newer members, I think you'll enjoy this. It's a chance to participate, express your opinion, and, eventually, vote. Once again, Terry (member name "Ventboys") and I are coordinating on the project.

The GOR was created by our late, great friend Bob Gregory (Rgregory1956) back in 2011. The premise is simple: What if the baseball Hall of Fame had begun 50 years sooner than it actually did? What if the first Hall of Fame ballot was sent out in 1885?

We’ll let Bob explain the premise - this is his original post:

This is the basic premise of the GOR (Gallery of Renown): Chadwick and a group of baseball powers decided to open a GOR in 1885, electing one player per year. But instead of a yes/no, in/out type of ballot like the real Hall of Fame uses, instead, a ballot very much like the MVP vote is used. Each year, starting in 1885, voters submitted their ballots, ranking their ten most deserving of enshrinement in order. The leading vote-getter was elected.

Some specifics —

• Bob did away with the 75 percent voting threshold for election in favor of quotas. From 1885 (the first election) through 1899 there would be one player elected each year.

• From 1900 forward there would be two players elected each year.

• Separate elections are held for managers and for contributors every ten years

• Manager elections were held in years ending with zero

• Contributor elections held in years ending with a five.

• Elections are modeled after the annual BBWAA (Baseball Writers’ Association of America) MVP award votes. Each ballot consists of ten names, listed in order of preference. The points for each position on the ballot are awarded on a 14-11-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale. The only exceptions were the early manager and contributor ballots, which elected just one and included four names.

Bob Gregory passed away on September 13, 2016 after a decade of battling a variety of serious illnesses. He was 60 years old. Many of us knew him, and all of us who knew him miss him terribly.

We promised to continue the GOR as Bob’s proxy, and we will hold these elections every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas to coincide with that other one in Cooperstown. Terry ("Ventboys") and I coordinate on the kickoff, management of the process, and posting of the final results.

THE CANDIDATES

The basic protocols:

  • The lists are in alphabetical order.
  • The number to the left of the player reflects the number of years he’s been on the ballot, including this year.
  • If the player finished in the top ten last year, we list his finish to the right of the player’s name.
  • When it's time to vote, you vote for ten players and put them in order like it’s an MVP ballot.
  • The scoring is 14 for a 1st place vote, 11 for 2nd, then 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

A few notes about the voting:
  • Mike Mussina and Curt Schilling were last year’s inductees.
  • Five returning candidates received between 239 and 291 points in the 2021 voting, so 2022 might come down to a single ballot. There were big gaps between Scott Rolen in seventh (239), Gary Sheffield in eighth (193), Kenny Lofton in ninth (132) and Jim Edmonds in 10th (83).
  • Each of the top 10, including Edmonds, received at least one first-place vote. Bernie Williams, who finished 15th in the voting, also received two first-place votes. A total of 32 players made a ballot.
  • The BBWAA shortened its eligibility period to 10 years, but the GOR uses 15 years. A couple of players exhausted their eligibility in 2019 (Willie McGee and Tony Phillips), but the closest anyone comes to the deadline this year is David Cone, who is appearing on his 12th ballot.
  • We always include a few candidates who have little or no chance of getting votes so Terry can riff on ‘em. If we missed anybody, bring him up in the comments section.

This year’s returning candidates:

The number to the left of the player’s name is the number of years he has been on the ballot. Returning top ten finishers are marked with last year’s finish.

Schedule particulars:
  • Discussion starts now.  Don’t vote yet, and don’t vote here.  Before the voting starts, there's discussion and debate. I started a thread on Reader Posts here.  We encourage you to participate in the discussion.
  • Voting will commence in a separate article on December 18.
  • Voting closes December 31
  • Results will be announced shortly thereafter.
  • Have fun.
That was all Bob cared about – that we had fun with the process.

Rollins was my fault; he was on my list, but I must have accidentally deleted his name while I was folding in the newbies.

Okay, I just spent 15 minutes trying to find the actual Gallery of Renown, listing the inductees, without any success. All I found were the discussion threads from 2016 onwards.

Can you please provide a link to the actual Gallery?

Thank you.
