Remember me

3000, 3000, 3000

November 11, 2011

George Brett had 3,154 hits in his career, 3,178 runs scored and driven in, and 3,187 secondary bases.   In general—not absolutely and without fail—these numbers tend to be about the same.    Harold Baines had 2,866, 2,927 and 2,834.   Roberto Alomar had 2,724, 2,642 and 2,800, Johnny Damon currently has 2,723, 2,763 and 2,813, and Rusty Staub had 2,716, 2,655, 2,771.   Orlando Cepeda had 2,351, 2,496 and 2,338.   Barry Larkin had 2,340, 2,289 and 2,505.

Bill White, the Cardinal first baseman of the early 1960s, had 1,706, 1,713 and 1,713.  Keith Hernandez, a similar player twenty years later, had 2,182, 2,195 and 2,200.   Dusty Baker had 1,981, 1,977 and 1,991.   Texas outfielder David Murphy has current totals of 504, 504 and 509.   Richie Zisk was at 1,477, 1,473 and 1,459.   Conor Jackson is at 591, 586 and 576.   J.J. Hardy is at 776, 782 and 759.  Adrian Beltre is at 2,033, 2,107 and 2,073.  Alex Rios is at 1,187, 1,151 and 1,145.  Ryan Spilborghs is at 424, 440 and 439.   Hunter Pence is at 835, 800 and 834.   Ryan Zimmerman is at 947, 985 and 989.   Ty Wigginton is at 1,087, 1,057 and 1,104.   Miguel Montero is at 442, 462 and 448.   Dustin Pedroia is at 862, 823, 830, and his college teammate Andre Ethier is at 864, 866 and 905.

"Secondary Bases" are extra bases on hits, plus walks, plus stolen bases.   Both in our own time and across history, these numbers tend to track one another, so that players who get 3,000 hits also tend to have 3,000 runs scored and driven in and 3,000 secondary bases; not always, not absolutely, but tend to.    If you take all players in baseball history who have played 1,000 games or more (not including pitchers), they average 1,498 hits, 1,478 runs + RBI, and 1,421 secondary bases.

This coincidence is very useful, because it gives us an easy way to spot hitters who are better or worse than their batting averages would suggest.   If a player has more secondary bases than hits in his career, he will usually also have more runs scored/RBI than hits, because secondary bases (walks, power, and stolen bases) lead to runs scored and RBI.    If the player has fewer secondary bases than hits, he will almost always have fewer runs scored/RBI than hits, except that players who played before 1920, when errors were frequent, may have more runs scored/RBI than hits even if they had low secondary averages, because the errors led to many runs scored in that era, as they do in high school baseball or other less developed leagues.

3,000 hits is a standard of an automatic Hall of Fame player.    But in a rational universe, more weight should probably be given to 3,000 runs scored/RBI than to 3,000 hits.    Suppose that there are two players, one with 3,000 hits and 2,500 runs scored/RBI, and the other with 2,500 hits but 3,000 runs scored/RBI.   Who would you rather have?   Yes, there are issues of fair context for measuring run contributions, but in general you would rather have runs than hits.  Jim Thome is nowhere near 3,000 hits, but well over 3,000 Run Points.  That’s what I’m going to call runs scored and RBI, run points.

There are now 28 players with 3,000 career hits (really?   I thought it was like eleven.)   No, it’s now 28.   When I became a baseball fan in 1960 there were seven, and in the 1970s experts would talk about how there wouldn’t be any more because now the players, they make this big money early in their careers, they’re all going to blow out before they’re 30.   Seriously.

Anyway, we’ve added nine since 1995, meaning that there have been more in the last fifteen years than in all of baseball history before expansion.   The 3,000-hit type players can be sorted into three categories:

a)                   The "legitimate" 3,000 guys, who had 3,000 hits and also 3,000 secondary bases and 3,000 run points,

b)                  The weaker 3,000s, who had 3,000 hits but fell short in one of the other areas,  and

c)                  Those who didn’t have 3,000 hits, but who did get to 3,000 in the other areas.  This group actually includes the most productive hitters in baseball history—Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Ted Williams and others.

The "Complete" 3,000 guys

Of the 28 players with 3,000 hits, 18 also had 3,000 secondary bases and 3,000 run points.   Chronologically, those players are:

We might observe here that Aaron, Mays and Rickey Henderson were much better hitters than their batting averages reveal and that Rose was not quite the hitter his batting average might suggest, but still, he did get to 3,000 secondary bases and 3,000 run points.    We’re still in the "stuff everybody sort of already knows" portion of our program.

The Weaker 3,000-Hit Guys

Of the other ten players, all had less than 3,000 secondary bases, and, because they didn’t walk much and didn’t have much power, seven of the ten also fell short of 3,000 run points:

      Three points:

1)       I regard Cap Anson as a player who got 3,000 hits,

2)      Derek Jeter will certainly get 3,000 Run Points and may get 3,000 Secondary Bases, and

3)      Robin Yount’s inclusion in this group, rather than the previous one, is a boundary call; he really has a normal ratio of hits to other run elements.

At the time Cap Anson was playing nobody was keeping track of career records; thus, no one had any interest in whether he had 3,000 hits or did not.   Not long after he retired somebody (probably Ernest Lanigan) added up the totals and concluded that he had had 3,000 hits, and at the time that Honus Wagner went past 3,000 hits the Reach Guide  reported that he was the third player to get to 3,000, the other two being Anson and Emil Frisk, who got most of his hits on the West Coast.

Almost a hundred years later—after numerous revisions to the totals from many different researchers—it was learned that there had been an error in adding up Anson’s hit total in one season, an error of ten hits, and that, given the best accounting we can do, Anson probably did not get 3,000 hits in the National League in the years 1876 to 1897.   However, since Anson had been a regular player for five years in the precursor of the National League, the National Association, it seems ungenerous to deny him the status of a 3,000-hit player, however much we might dislike the old SOB.

No one is saying that Lajoie, Carew, Boggs and Gwynn weren’t fine players; they were.   They weren’t the equal of Wagner, Collins, Brett and Musial.

The Guys Who Didn’t Get 3,000 Hits, But Were Just As Good As The Guys Who Did

There are 25 players in history who did not get to 3,000 hits, but who drove in and scored 3,000 runs.     The first 15 of these players were retired by 1989, and all of those players are already in the Hall of Fame.   The last ten all began their careers in 1989 or later, and are not in the Hall of Fame.  They are all players who would certainly be in the Hall of Fame, in time, were it not for the steroid issue:

This group, we might say generally, contains the greatest hitters in the history of baseball—even greater than those who did get 3,000 hits.  Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Ken Griffey Jr., Lou Gehrig, A-Rod. .. they don’t come any bigger than that.    Beckley is different because he’s from the era of frequent errors, so he has to be evaluated differently.

Mickey Mantle had only 2,415 hits, but just short of 4,000 secondary bases.   Williams had more than 4,000.   Babe Ruth had more than 5,000.   Barry Bonds had more than 6,000.   Bonds had 3,041 extra bases on hits, 2,558 walks, and 514 stolen bases—an all-time record 6,113 secondary bases.    Barry Bonds (2.08) and Mark McGwire (2.06) are the only players in baseball history who had twice as many secondary bases as hits.   Adam Dunn is at 1.92, the great Ken Phelps was at 1.91, and Babe Ruth was fifth on the list at 1.78.

There are, finally, fourteen players in baseball history who did not have 3,000 hits and did not have 3,000 run points, but who did have 3,000 secondary bases:

These are underrated players—players who have non-obvious Hall of Fame credentials—and the first five of them are in the Hall of Fame.   The last nine are not and perhaps should be, but we’ll save that argument for another time.

The Current Generation

So, among the current generation of players, which ones have the most non-representative batting averages?   Which hitters are better than their batting averages, most notably, and which are worse?

Among all active players with 500 or more career plate appearances, the ten players who are most notably better hitters than their batting averages would suggest are Adam Dunn, Jim Thome, Carlos Pena, Mark Reynolds, Ryan Howard, Russell Branyan, Jack Cust, Carlos Santana, Jason Giambi and Chris Iannetta.

2011 Abe Lincoln Scores

The Abe Lincoln Score, which I introduced here a few months ago, attempts to focus on a player’s underlying hitting or pitching skill by reducing the game to four outcomes:   Home Runs, Walks and Hit Batsmen, Balls in Play, and Strikeouts.    The top ten major league hitters in the final 2011 Abe Lincoln Scores were:

The most interesting names there being Drew Stubbs and Adam Dunn. A lot of people think of Drew Stubbs as an exciting young player with MVP potential. It ain’t happening.   He’s too far away from being a good hitter. And, while Adam Dunn certainly had an extremely low in-play average, he also was very ineffective if we set that aside and focus only on the four outcomes—strikeout, walk, home run, ball in play.

For once, Bill, you want to include the NA. With it, Anson clears 3,000 hits.

Back to the toy department of life. Interesting work Mr. James. I just wonder about numbers that put Callaspo & Wells inn the top slots for the Angels.

If we mentally deflate stolen bases by 30-50% (three SBs do not equal the difference between a HR and a single), it appears that since the lively ball era, Run Points more closely tracks Secondary Bases than Hits. This makes some sense to me, because some of the value of a single comes from moving runners along without necessarily driving them in; while almost all the value of Secondary Bases would derive from plating a runner on base, or getting on yourself to eventually score a run.

Dead ball era Run Points, though, seems to track Hits better than Secondaries. I don't have an explanation for that, unless it's simply that Hits exceed Secondaries in that period, and scoring exceeded Run Created due to greater non-statistical offense, like errors, DPs and baserunning.

I have rickey Henderson at 5129 Secondary bases and 3410 runs+rbi. First list worthy.
