Remember me

Something's Coming

February 3, 2011

Things will soon be changing at Bill James Online. The website you see in front of you was first developed a long, long time ago, when Andres Torres was still a marginal major leaguer. Unfortunately, the developers moved on and since then we haven’t been able to update the site as much as we’d like.

That’s why the site looks the same as it ever was. It’s why we haven’t improved the Reader Posts section. It’s why "Fun Stuff" is still listed in the navigation even though we haven’t added any fun stuff since we first opened our doors. Bill’s writing has been as fantastic as ever (with an extra shoutout to Dave Fleming), but the site itself has muddled along.

As a result, Bill James Online has never become what Bill James wanted it to be. Bill has always envisioned an active community rather than passive readers. He wants the polls to be robust and interesting. He wants you to be able to more easily exchange ideas, post your own stats and findings. Bill sees this site as the place where he will spend the rest of his career sharing his ideas while learning from you at the same time.

It hasn’t come together that way yet, but things are looking up. We have engaged a web development company to re-think Bill James Online, and we’re in the middle of that process right now.  Here are some of the changes we’re contemplating…

First of all the graphics are going to change.  The site will still remain a "low-key" graphical site, without lots of bells and whistles. Bill’s preference is to keep things simple, and the site will reflect that. But the graphic at the top of the page will be a little bolder, the fonts a little bigger.

Secondly, we’re going to beef up the public portion of the site.  Right now, there isn’t much to see unless you’ve subscribed to BJOL.  Potential new users can only see an old "tour" that was put together a couple of years ago.

On the new site, non-subscribers will get to read the most recent "Hey Bills."  They won’t be able to ask questions, but they’ll get to read the answers. Same thing with Reader Posts. We may even make some of Bill’s articles available to the public—occasionally and for a limited time.

This will help us better market the site and make it more enticing for potential new subscribers.

We’re also going to winnow down the number of menu items along the top of the page.  We’ll have Articles, Hey Bill, Reader Posts, Polls & Ratings, and Stats. That’s it.

These are the most-used portions of the site, and this structure will make it easier for you to find your way around. Over time, there will be a lot of options within those menu items, such as new authors or different types of polls.  But the basic navigation of the site will remain simple.

Reader Posts, Polls and Stats will all be different.  We know that the Reader Posts section is not very user-friendly.  We will have new bulletin board software in place, and it will be a lot more flexible than the current version.

We haven’t done as much with Polls and Ratings as we intended to, partly because we just haven’t been able to properly capture Bill’s ideas into a polling format.  We plan to improve that section of the site a lot, making it more interactive and interesting than just a one-shot "Who’s Better" type of poll.  It will probably take us a while to get there, but we will get there.

The Statistics section will change a lot.  We will continue to make some of the current profiles, such as the detailed fielding stats, available.  But there will be a different emphasis on a "community" of statistics. Bill will post spreadsheets of his work in the Statistics section, and all of you will be encouraged to post your own spreadsheets, data tables or what-have-you on the site. We want to build a community of knowledge.

There will be other, more mundane, changes to the site.  We will have an RSS feed.  Our email alert system will actually work. Stuff like that.  All in all, this will be a big improvement to Bill James Online.

I’m not entirely sure when the new site will roll out, but I’m pretty sure it will be before the Giants win their next World Series.  Seriously, I’m guessing it will happen early in the baseball season. Once we have a definite schedule, we’ll announce it.

How about getting new content on a weekly basis? $36/year for the occasional article and Q&A is too much.

Also, when Bill writes multi-part articles it would be nice to have a button that clicks to "Prev" and "Next" to make it easy to hop to the related article(s) in one click. (or go to part "n" buttons)

You might want to rethink whether the 'Hey Bill' text is available for free. There are times (such as January 20 - February 22) when there are large time gaps between Bill's articles and the only new material from him are the replies to the Hey Bill questions. It's one thing to give them away for free if you view them as merely a teaser for plenty of other content, but it has the potential to hurt your subscription base if you give away too large a % of the content.

One thing that frustrates me is the inability to do anything with the stats. I can't look at the whole league in one glance...I have to click each team to get its stats. It is nice to see the Yankees have a 6.02 ERA in their losses, but that doesn't tell if that is better or worse than the league average. Or the Red Sox, or Royals, and so on.

As long as you don't remove the Win Shares sections of the stats, I have no problem with any of the changes suggested.

First, a sincere expression of appreciation for the site itself. You permit digressions of political material (I'm guilty), and accept comments highly critical of your positions, allowing readers to examine many points of view. Bill has written on subjects, both political and baseball-related, with which I have greatly disagreed (and many more which I have supported). He has printed and answered my (sometimes less than mannerly) objections. The site is a vibrant celebration of the First Amendment--and so, many thanks.

One criticism: in your reorganization can you, in Readers Posts and Hey Bill, re-format so that charts of numbers can print horizontally right-reading without running together when submitted by readers? Presently, stacked columnar presentation of each heading drags on endlessly causing the piece to lose much import. Thanks for taking your readers' thoughts into consideration.

I may have missed this point....not sure: What about being able to commnent in the "Ask Bill" portion of the website. Often his comments lead to more thoughts and conversation and it would be nice to converse with "the dude".

Perhaps something you could do something with the 'R & D Lab' type joint and structured discussions.

You probably could do something in regards to a (free) article proposal process, though someone official then ought to read-and-approve any actual article prior to it going up on the site.

(For what it's worth: I don't have that problem about needing to re-log-in so often. It only pops up maybe every 2-3 weeks or so.)

Also, you have many writers on the "Readers Posts" section who could, I'm sure, write excellent, longer articles for the "Other Columnists" section: Bill could ask for volunteers, and I'm sure he'd get a few good ones easily.

Could you look into the business of having to log in almost every time I come on site, even though I (used to) keep checking off "remember me." It's irritating, and unnecessary--other website that I log into have easy ways to recognize me and keep me logged in, even when I go off the computer for a few days. and yes, having to sign my name (as below) is irritating, too.

Just a 'yes' vote for FlyingFish's suggestion. It's unusual for a site not to 'default-ly' indicate the user name for such a thing. A few times I've forgotten to enter my name, and haven't ever really known if our name shows up for Bill anyway.....so, sometimes I've then re-submitted the question with my user name entered. But I imagine some of the "Anonymous" questions have come from people who just neglected to enter their names.

All sounds like good stuff - if you're going to do statistics though, please let us know what you'll have that sites like FanGraphs and Baseball Reference do not.

One small suggestion. If you are logged in, your user name should appear automatically in the "asked by" box. If you want to be anonymous, then you should have to choose that option deliberately. It shouldn't be the default as it is now.

I like it! The site is fine now and a bargain, but I think the steamlining and opening up sounds good.

Great! I'm looking forward to the new design. I hope that in the new stat section you include historical data. It'd be nice to have one location available to find all win shares data.

Sounds great! For those of us who like to print stuff to read at the gym, it would be really great if the print function was made more functional...

Are you going to keep old articles online or will this turn into an occasion for some housecleaning?

Great to hear! As a lot of members know, I've been doing my part lately to raise the clamor about this -- and it seems that the coming format might well give us exactly what we want and need.

Just one detail: Nothing is mentioned about whether the new format will include an "Edit" function for comments and posts, but can we assume it will? As I've said, there have been times I would have given my string of poloponies to be able to edit some stupid thing I said.... :-)

Also, for reader posts and questions to Bill will we get to preview our questions before submitting them?

For reader posts and Hey Bill, would you consider sections titled "All Things Baseball" and a list of other relevant topics to this board (I.e., "True Crime," "Football," "Basketball," "Politics,")?

I'd suggest one other menu item: Reference, xor FAQ xor something like that.
e.g. summaries of statistics (how to calculate season scores, Cy Young points,...), or a single page that links to all Bill's Win-Loss Shares pages.

I second Detroit Michael, and will add a comment -- er, question: what happened to all the fine contributors who USED to post here? Some of them haven't put up an article in more than a year (particularly Roel Torres). I realize the intention was originally to be "when of interest", not on a regular weekly or even monthly basis, but have they ALL lost all interest?

Thanks for the announcement, and thanks for "shaking up" the site!

I (and I'm guessing others) are more interested in Bill's content than the format of the website. It's the content (including the Hey Bill stuff) and to a lesser extent the BIS statistics that I value.
