Bill James Online site maintenance

Update: the site will be unavailable again for a few hours on Wednesday 5/20. We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience.

Hi BJOL members,

In an effort to modernize and improve the reliability and performance of Bill James Online, we've been working over the last several weeks to transition to a new hosting provider. As a result, a few of the site's popular functions, including the Bill James Profiles, have been offline. We expect to bring them back online and restore the site to full functionality shortly. If for any reason, we have to temporarily make the site unavailable, we'll be sure to let you know well in-advance. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at support@billjamesonline.com.

Thanks for your continued support.

Sorry, typo:
In the "We were told" paragraph, "on then click onto Reader Posts" is supposed to be only then.....

Just wanted to thank the administrators for this heads-up. I've been on sites that said nothing.

It helps to know. :-)

To David: I don't know if this has anything to do with the trouble you're having, but just in case:
A few years ago, a lot of us were having a similar problem -- and the way it got solved for us (if we can call this "solved" -- it didn't fix the issue but told us how to work around it):

We were told to avoid coming onto the site via Reader Posts -- i.e. begin on some different page, like "Home" or "Articles" (I think they both work), and on then click onto Reader Posts.
That has worked 100% for me, provided that when I last "logged in," I checked the "keep me logged in" box. (or whatever it's called, don't remember the exact wording)

I still have to re-log-in occasionally but only rarely -- and oh, I should mention, I'm talking about how it is on my laptop; it still does occur more frequently on my phone, but not real often there either.

Just in case that might be what it is.....

David, your difficulties sound like they're related to a bug in the software for which there is a workaround. I don't promise anything, because the workaround is generally successful after at most two tries, but FWIW: when while already logged in the site asks you to log in, do not do so, rather hit the browser's back arrow and then click on the same link that took you to the login page. If it takes you to a page that asks you to click on another link to Reader Posts, do not do so, rather hit the back arrow again and try the desired link.

Again, no promises. Typically I get the login page when I'm already in Reader Posts, not when I'm trying to get there, so you may be encountering a bug that is yours alone.

Jesus, david, that's ridiculous. I trust you're getting a rebate.

When I am already signed in to BJOL and go to readers posts it asks again for my password, and then asks again, and again. This all started a few months ago when I got an email saying my pasword was known. And indeed, they had the right password. So, I changed my password, nothing else, and ever since "readers posts " have been off limits for me. Rylan got on it and changed a bunch of things, none of them worked, so i have not read a readers post since whenever, long time. My user name is different, password different, everything else works, readers posts are a no go

Fletch: "This isn't a restaurant." :-) :-)

Heh. True enough. But it doesn't hurt to ask (politely).

Maybe a year ago or so I asked Rylan (politely) about being able to block threads. He replied that the current site didn't have that feature but if they moved to a new platform it might. Or might not. We'll see.

I agree with GFletch's second point. On another internet message board that uses this same vBulletin software, the arrows in front of the thread titles take me to the last read posts but it often doesn't work here.

Fletch: "This isn't a restaurant." :-) :-)

(That's a line that I got said to me the first time I showed up at the weekly pick-up softball game that I've now been in for >30 years, when I didn't like the first pitch I got and showed where I wanted the ball.)

I'd like two new features or bug fixes and hope to see them:

1. The ability to block a thread
2. A fix: Often when I log in and go to Reader Posts, a bunch of new posts aren't bolded as they should be if I haven't looked at them. I have to check the dates and times to see which ones have come up since I was last onsite.

Looking forward to the new platform.

David: You really can't get on there?
(I guess not!) :-)

If you've seriously tried and it doesn't work, we could probably help you out right now if you say what you've tried and what happens....

Elliott: Thanks for the compliments. :-)

BTW, as we later learned -- not that we ever imagined that Spiggy himself came up with those -- most or all of them came from William Safire.

Glad to hear it.
Does this mean I will be able to access "Readers Posts" again?

I did not expect to see Spiro Agnew quoted today in a comment posted on site by an effete, impudent, snobbish nabob of our 4-H Club's Corps of Hopelessly Hysterical Hypochondriacs whose history of nattering negativity translates into a whimpering isolationism in foreign policy, a mulish obstructionism in domestic policy, and a pusillanimous pussyfooting on the critical issue of law and order?

My first reaction: Uh-oh... :-)

Hopefully, needlessly.
I'm reminded of a thing Spiro Agnew said, that we made fun of:
"A lot of us think this country isn't so bad and we want to keep it the way it is."

Just hope nothing will be worse, and that nothing from the site will be lost.
BTW, I ought to say, I was extremely impressed, and frankly surprised, at how much of everything was retained when the site had the big transition to the current format, which I think was about 8 to 10 years ago.
I wouldn't have expected anything to be retained with such a transition (from a format that was unrecognizable compared to this one), and just about everything was.
