Olympic Projections Update

August 15, 2016

Prior to the start of the 2016 Olympics, our projections pegged the United States as the favorite to win both the most Gold Medals (42) and the most Total Medals (101). After a great first week for the country, the US has increased their projected medals to 46 Gold and 113 Total, which also projects to be an incredible 20-Gold and 37-Overall Medal advantage over the field.

Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky have led the way for the US’s strong men’s and women’s swimming contingent, combining to win 9 Gold Medals and 2 Silver Medals. In total, US swimming has won 16 Gold Medals, which is more than any other country has won in all events.

Aside from the US, the two other countries who have improved their outlook most since the initial projections are Great Britain and Russia. Great Britain has increased their projected Medals by 5 Golds and 5 Overall, and Russia has increased their projected Medals by 3 Golds and 7 Overall. In contrast, China has seen its projected Medals decline by 9 Golds and 6 Overall.
