Starting Pitcher Rankings April 6, 2012

April 5, 2012

Justin Verlander and Roy Halladay consolidated their hold on the 1-2 spots in starting pitcher rankings, while Justin Masterson climbed 9 spots (from 59 to 50) with his strong outing against Toronto.   Johan Santana re-enters the listing in 151st place.

Trying to hit on the right pattern to post these. . . .every day is too often, but I don’t know which day of the week to hit on.    Maybe every Tuesday morning?   Let’s try Tuesday. . ..

Thank you I'm really going to enjoy this series.

I appreciate your effort to link to the article. Links to the articles here aren't always going to work, because it's a pay site; people who attempt to click on the link may find that it doesn't go through because of a permission issue. But from my standpoint, I don't really have an issue with it.

HG.. ..The "Stats" section was set up for stuff that is routinely delivered by a computer. This process isn't computerized; I have to figure it myself and then post it manually.

I kind of think Thursday may be the day to post the rankings.

On posting schedule I would suggest using one of the traditional travel days (Monday or Thursday)- that way most pitchers will be resting and the data will be more "solid." Posting on Monday gives you an immediate update of what just happened over the past weekend. Posting on Thursday gives you a nice snapshot of what matchups/storylines to look forward to in the coming weekend. Of the two I would recommend Thursday- the world is already full to the brim with Monday recaps of every shape or size.

Why not put the current ranking in the stats section? That way you could update the list as often as you are willing to, and we could always know where to check for the most current rankings. You could still post an article weekly with your commentary.

I'm sorry, I was looking at start of the season rank. You may want to swap the first and last column. Current rank should probably be in the first column.

You still have Masterson with a 59 ranking, even though you moved him up in the list.

Hm! It just occurred that, depending on the site you're at, the hyperlinks below might or might not be in accordance with etiquette.

At my site, we encourage linking that furthers the discussion, whether or not the person who linked it also wrote it. But suddenly it dawns that I don't know whether that's the case here.

If the below hyperlinks are not in accordance with site policy, please delete, and my apologies. If they are in compliance, I think you'll find the deployment of Mr. James system to be interesting.

Thanks,
Jeff

Along with golf and tennis rankings, there are chess ratings. The Arpad Elo chess system is similar to James' and chessplayers could not live without it. :- )

Here is a discussion of the awesome Starting Pitcher Rankings system from the perspective of a tournament chess player: seattlesportsinsider.com/news/starting-pitcher-rankings-out

And here's an example of a pre-series writeup, the 2-gamer between SEA and OAK, which exploits the new rankings system to add fun to the pre-series buildup: seattlesportsinsider.com/news/seattle-oakland-series-starting-pitcher-rankings

These might not be the best articles that will ever use the James ranking system, but we might be able to claim that they're the first :- )

Cheers,
Jeff
