Can a team last in on-base percentage get to the playoffs?

April 20, 2005
The two teams that are currently in last place in on-base percentage are the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox. Remarkably, both teams lead their respective divisions. On top of that, the Cardinals are the defending National League champions while the White Sox currently have the best record in the American League thus far this season.

Since the current playoff structure in baseball began in 1969, there have been 184 teams in the playoffs. Only two of them finished last in their league in on-base percentage. The 1996 L.A. Dodgers lost three games to zero in the first round of the playoffs. The other team fared quite well—the 1985 Kansas City Royals went on to win the World Series.
