How much scoring is done in the NFL by the defense and special teams?

November 16, 2004
The Chicago Bears managed just three points from their offense this past week, but a safety scored by the defense beat the Tennessee Titans in overtime. The defense also posted an interception return touchdown while special teams scored a TD on a punt return. A second punt return TD was called back by a phantom penalty.

Final tally for Bears scoring:
  • Defense ¨ 9
  • Special Teams ¨ 7
  • Offense ¨ 3
In the NFL, the offense scores 92% of the points while the defense and special teams account for just 6% and 2%, respectively. The Bears lead the league in scoring by their defense with 32 points, 21% of their total team points.
